🌱 Possible Energy Relief Fund + New Redistricting Map

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Anchorage.

Up and at 'em, Anchorage! Here's everything you need to know to get this Friday started off right.

First, today's weather:

Cloudy. High: 41 Low: 32.

Here are the top 3 stories today in Anchorage:

  1. Lawmakers reportedly plan to propose to pay Alaskans $1,300, a sum additional to the annual Permanent Fund dividend. The state received a higher-than-expected revenue and the Alaska House would like to use it as a kind of "Energy Relief Fund" to offset the rising costs of fuel and general inflation. (ADN.com)
  2. The great-aunt of an Anchorage woman has been missing for decades. Mary Kininnook was sent to a boarding school in Pennsylvania back in the 1960s and never returned home. Kininnook reportedly died there although the family was never provided with any details, nor have they been able to find her gravesite. Today, her family member Eleanor Hadden continues to search for answers and to try to bring Kininnook's body back to Alaska. (Alaska Public Media News)
  3. A new redistricting map has been chosen unanimously by the Anchorage Assembly. The map chosen was deemed to be the fairest for all involved and was drafted by Assembly member John Weddleton and Denny Wells, a member of the public. (Anchorage Daily News)

From my notebook:

  • The Charlotte Jensen Native Arts Market kicked off Wednesday at the Dimond Center Mall. Stop by this week and see all the amazing Alaska Native artisans selling and demonstrating their art – basket weaving, dolls, beading, carving, and more. This is a rare opportunity to meet and greet the artists and watch them create one-of-a-kind items. (Facebook)
  • Anchorage's Fur Rendezvous winter festival is in full swing and the city sparkles with fantastic outdoor events, unique Alaska traditions, and lots of family fun. Check out the event schedule for this weekend to see what else is in store. (Facebook)
  • With some waving Ukrainian flags and wearing blue and yellow, a crowd gathered at Anchorage's Town Square Park on Wednesday evening to show their support for Ukraine in the face of the Russian invasion. Speakers shared personal stories about their connection to Ukraine and songs were sung during a candlelight vigil. (Instagram)
