📰 News we're reading

• Swimmers ask Kenai to help keep school pool open (kbbi.org) — Kenai’s Central High School pool is set to lose school district funding July 1, and local swimmers are urging the city to help keep it open. City officials, the swim club, and the borough are exploring options, but cost disagreements and tight timelines leave the pool’s future uncertain for Kenai families who rely on it for safety and recreation.

• ALASKA: Board of Fish proposal would sub seines for setnets in commercial Cook Inlet fishery (savingseafood.org) — A Kenai couple’s experimental use of beach seines is now informing a proposed statewide rule change for Cook Inlet’s east-side setnet fishery when king salmon runs are weak. The Board of Fisheries will consider allowing beach seines instead of traditional setnets under specific run forecasts, aiming to keep sockeye harvests viable while reducing king salmon deaths.
