Nome terminal upgrades on backburner, Alaska Airlines says (knom.org) — Alaska Airlines plans to demolish and completely rebuild its congested Kodiak terminal later this year, aiming to fix long-standing baggage and security bottlenecks. The project is part of a $72 million statewide upgrade plan that also covers terminals in Utqiaġvik, Bethel, Nome, King Salmon, and Dillingham, with Kodiak’s overhaul prioritized ahead of Nome’s.
   

2. Nearly 150 Gray Whales Have Been Found Dead Along North America's Pacific Shore This Year, Prompting Scientists to Sound the Alarm (smithsonianmag.com) — Gray whales are washing up dead in unusually high numbers along the Pacific coast, and scientists warn 2026 could be one of their worst years. Some of these stressed whales are now appearing more often near Kodiak and Sitka, likely searching for new food as climate change disrupts their traditional feeding grounds, raising concerns about broader ocean health.
   

3. Dunleavy sets state record for most vetoes in a single Legislature (juneauindependent.com) — Kodiak residents’ own senator, Gary Stevens, is at the center of a record-setting clash as Gov. Mike Dunleavy vetoes 29 bills from the current Legislature. Lawmakers, including Stevens, are now negotiating a massive proposed property tax break for a trans-Alaska gas pipeline developer, while several insurance and vehicle-related bills await the governor’s final decisions on tight July deadlines.
