📰 News we're reading

1. Daily Livestock Report: Feeder Cattle Prices Rebound From Recent Lows (meatingplace.com) — Cattle imports through the Douglas port have resumed strongly since the August 24 reopening, with nearly 6,000 head crossing just last week and more than 17,000 year to date. That renewed flow is helping stabilize feeder cattle supplies and prices across the Southern Plains, even as markets remain below last year’s highs and other ports like Santa Teresa slowly ramp back up.

2. Beef prices stay stubbornly high as cattle shortage hits Texas barbecue (washingtontimes.com) — Douglas’s cattle port plays a key role in easing a national beef shortage, after reopening August 24 to Mexican livestock under strict screwworm inspections. Even so, tight herds and strong imports are keeping beef prices high for restaurants and shoppers nationwide, forcing some Texas barbecue spots to drop brisket or experiment with cheaper cuts.

3. Another port reopens to cattle from Mexico amid NWS cases nearby (avma.org) — Livestock imports through Douglas resumed August 24 as part of USDA’s phased reopening of southern ports, though inspections briefly paused for chute repairs on the Mexico side. With nearby screwworm cases in New Mexico and Texas, every animal entering through Douglas and Santa Teresa now faces multiple veterinary checks, canine screening, and stricter Mexican-side safeguards to protect U.S. herds.

4. Weekly Review: Corn Stocks Shock Leads Broad Crop Selloff as Soybean Oil and Livestock Hold Firmer (agbull.com) — Douglas’s livestock port, reopened August 24, is again channeling Mexican feeder cattle into U.S. markets, adding supply as traders digest a sharp corn-stock surprise and mixed moves in livestock futures. While cheaper corn and meal may ease feed costs for area producers, cattle prices remain relatively firm, and overall grain markets ended the week under heavy pressure.
