📰 News we're reading

1. Busing issues plague EVIT after feud resolved (eastvalleytribune.com) — Transportation problems are disrupting access to EVIT’s Mesa campuses even after a funding dispute with nine East Valley school districts was resolved. Parents and superintendents report late or missing rides and concerns over contracted drivers, while EVIT’s superintendent acknowledges a rocky rollout of a new system meant to move more than 1,000 students from 26 high schools.

2. Mesa approves commercial drone limits (eastvalleytribune.com) — Mesa has just approved new rules for commercial drones and fleet services, limiting where drones can be stored, how high they can be placed, and how close charging sites can be to homes. The council opted for a more flexible approach that still requires case-by-case review, aiming to manage future drone deliveries and EV charging while protecting neighborhood noise and visual impacts.

3. ‘Nana, the bank's being robbed': Mesa police praise boy who stayed calm during scary situation (azfamily.com) — A Mesa boy’s quick thinking during a robbery at a local Bank of America branch helped get his grandmother to safety before police arrested a suspect nearby. Mesa officers praised the 9-year-old’s calm response, and the family later finished opening his first savings account despite the bank lockdown, though they now plan to rely more on online banking.

4. Arizona Colorado River cuts would hit Valley cities unevenly, data shows (abc15.com) — Mesa relies on the Colorado River for 57% of its water, making it the most exposed of Arizona’s three largest cities if river supplies are cut. A new breakdown of statewide water use shows how differently Valley communities would be hit, with some almost fully dependent on Colorado River deliveries while others lean on groundwater or Salt-Verde supplies.
