Phoenix Mayor Stanton Officially Resigns

Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton officially resigned Tuesday ahead of his bid for a seat in Congress.

PHOENIX, AZ — Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton officially announced his resignation at noon on Tuesday, as was expected, in anticipation of his bid for a seat in Congress. The expected resignation follows an October 2017 announcement Stanton made of his intent to run for Congress.

"More than one week ago, Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton announced he would be resigning from office. That resignation happened today, Tuesday, May 29 at noon. The city has begun the process to fill his vacated seat," Phoenix officials said in a statement, according to AZ Family.

Vice Mayor Thelda Williams is serving as the interim mayor until one is permanently selected. She's still representing Phoenix's District 1.

"Arizonans deserve better than what we're getting from Washington, and there has never been a more consequential time in the fight to protect the middle class," Stanton said in a statement, AZ Family reported.

Stanton is making his bid to represent Arizona's 9th Congressional District, currently represented by fellow Democrat Kyrsten Sinema. Sinema aims to represent Arizona in the U.S. Senate.
