COVID-19 UPDATE

COVID-19 by the numbers. Maricopa County has been tracking COVID-19 cases since Jan. 22. Here are the most recent numbers for our county:

• Total number of cases: 96,047; up 1,205 from yesterday
• Total number of deaths: 1,435; up 12 from yesterday
• Hospital admissions: 3,746; 4 percent of total cases
• Intensive care admissions: 793; 1 percent of total cases

If you are going out in public, you could be exposed or could be exposing others -- even if not showing symptoms. Stay home when you can, practice physical distancing, cover your nose and mouth and wash your hands frequently.

Numbers don’t make sense to you? You’ve probably heard some skepticism voiced about COVID-19 data. You might have a question yourself. Here’s a common one:

Q: Aren’t we just seeing high case counts because of increased testing?

A: No. While increased testing accounts for some of rise in cases, epidemiologists say Arizona (and much of the country) has seen increased transmission of the virus as well.

Get tracking trends.

Act like you have COVID-19. Because COVID-19 is widespread in our community, it’s helpful to act as if you have the virus. In the worst case scenario, you’re inconvenienced by adapting your routine and daily interactions. In the best case scenario, you’re saving lives by protecting yourself and others. Remember, for every reported case, there are 10 undetected.

Important election deadlines and information. Friday is the last day to request a ballot by mail. Request a ballot here. The county must receive your ballot by Tuesday, Aug. 4, regardless of the postmarked date. Consider delivery time when mailing your ballot.

Weekend in-person voting starts Saturday, July 25. To allow voters time to cast ballots, vote centers will be open in phases before Election Day, starting Saturday. Up to 60 locations will be open, including in malls and retail facilities across the county. Find out where you can vote.

The U.S. Green Building Council has recognized the city’s Aviation Business Center with the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold certification. ADOT warns of Pima Freeway restrictions that affect Scottsdale. Several improvement projects will restrict traffic along Valleywide freeways through Saturday, July 25, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation. Allow extra travel time and consider alternate routes for these restrictions that affect Scottsdale:

• Hayden Road at the Pima Freeway
• Left turns from north-and southbound Hayden Road onto the Pima Freeway will be restricted to one lane nightly from 9 p.m.-5 a.m. beginning Monday, July 20, thru Friday, July 24.
• Pima Freeway between 64th Street and Scottsdale Road
• The eastbound Pima Freeway will be restricted to two lanes between 64th Street and Scottsdale Road nightly from 9 p.m.-5 a.m. Thursday, July 23, through Saturday, July 25.
• The westbound Pima Freeway will be restricted to two lanes between Scottsdale Road and 64th Street nightly from 9 p.m.-5 a.m. beginning Wednesday, July 22, through Saturday, July 25.

WestWorld offers drive-in concerts as part of nationwide series. WestWorld of Scottsdale will host a summer concert series in which each performance will be filmed exclusively for a one-night-only event. The series kicks off Saturday, July 25, with popular country artist Blake Shelton.
