Scottsdale Symphonic Orchestra’s six-part journey through the United States of America’s 250 years of spirit, struggle, and triumph continues with the fifth installment, The Wayfarer’s Hope: A Nation’s Journey, a poignant orchestral program tracing the emotional and physical journeys that shape both the United States of America and its people.

Opening with a world premiere of a newly commissioned overture by William C. White, the concert introduces a fresh voice in American music—an exploration of where the nation stands today and where it might go next. Mahler’s Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen (Songs of a Wayfarer), performed by soloist Sedona Libero, follows with an intimate portrayal of a traveler’s heartbreak, hope, and search for meaning, echoing the individual struggles that define the American experience.

After intermission, Sibelius’s Symphony no. 2 offers a sweeping, triumphant conclusion. Long associated with national identity and perseverance, the symphony’s final movement resonates with themes of independence and optimism. Together, these works form a musical narrative of resilience, transformation, and renewal—honoring the spirit of a nation that continues to evolve, 250 years into its journey.
