Here are the top stories in Scottsdale today:
- Scottsdale Schools are facing the Sept. 30 deadline for the use of COVID-19 federal relief funds. The Elementary and Secondary School Emergency (ESSER) Funds for Scottsdale Unified totaled $29.5M, provided in three parts, each with a progressive must-use date of Sept.30, 2021; Sept. 30, 2022; and Sept. 30, 2022. Recent school board meetings included discussions on how best to spend the remaining $225,000 before the first deadline. Patty Beckman, a member of the Scottsdale Unified School District Governing Board concerned about lagging student achievement, told the Daily Independent, "I can tell you right now a lot of our students are really falling behind. We don't have time to sit here and talk through the committees... to develop this wonderful plan. They're behind now. And, they need to hear how they can get the support today." The next meeting of the school board is on Sept. 28. (Your Valley)
- The OTTO Car Club in Scottsdale was featured on Arizona Morning Thursday. The car club is an interesting mix of a storage facility and a "social club." Members pay 'dues' to store and display their vintage and otherwise unique automobiles in a climate-controlled building that includes an open storage area, without post obstructions that is 32,000 square feet. According to the OTTO website, the facility "offers three types of vehicle storage: main floor, stacker suites, and private garages." (FOX 10 News)
- Scottsdale Unified School District was named number five in the state of Arizona, according to Niche. According to Patch staff writer Caitlin Sievers, the data sorting and neighborhood ranking firm uses various data points, including academics, teachers, and diversity, to rank the schools. "It's a great rating, and we should take pride in it," said Jann-Michael Greenburg, president of the Scottsdale Unified School Board. The top four schools/districts are: Heritage Academy in Mesa, A+; Catalina Foothills Unified School District in Tucson, A+; Chandler Unified School District, A; and Vail Unified School District, A.
