1. Public Comment Requested for the Draft Engineering Evaluation/Cost Analysis: Red Mountain Mines Site (usda.gov) — Tucson residents are being asked to weigh in on a proposed cleanup plan for the abandoned Red Mountain Mines, with public comments accepted from September 28 through October 30. A 22-member committee is reviewing data now, with public meetings planned and a board vote expected in December, making this a key moment for Tucson families to speak up about their neighborhood schools.
3. Second down: Numbers show UofA enrollment falling nearly 19% for second straight year (kgun9.com) — University of Arizona's Tucson campus is seeing its incoming first-year class shrink by nearly 19% for the second straight year, even as officials say they're prioritizing student success over raw growth. More Arizona residents and higher GPAs highlight the new strategy, but faculty leaders warn that fewer students could strain a tuition-dependent budget and potentially affect staffing and class sizes.
4. University of Arizona students warned about new street drug cychlorphine (kold.com) — University of Arizona health officials in Tucson are warning students about cychlorphine, a new and extremely potent synthetic opioid already linked to deadly overdoses in California and Nevada. They stress that Narcan still works, though multiple doses may be needed, and remind you that free Narcan is stocked in every AED cabinet on campus and available at all Pima County pharmacies and libraries.
5. Confirmed measles case reported in Pima County (kold.com) — Health officials in Tucson have confirmed that an international visitor developed measles after traveling in Pima County and visiting Banner's ER on North Campbell Avenue. They say overall risk is low but urge anyone who may have been there to monitor for symptoms, call ahead before seeking care, and check their MMR vaccination status, with shots available at county clinics and local providers.
