Cochise County Sheriff Warns Of Facebook Scam

One person lost $500 in the scam.

TUCSON, AZ – The Cochise County Sheriff's Office is warning residents about a Facebook scam. One person lost $500 in the scam.

In the scam, callers get a message on their Facebook account that appears to come from someone they know letting them know that they've been picked to receive a grant up to $500,000.

All that they have to do is call a number where they are told to get gift cards or money cards to cover delivery, insurance, and tax fees.

The sheriff's office says that 1) the person is not really the "friend" – it's someone who has hacked the account and 2) they have not really really a won a grant.

"Please do NOT fall victim to these scams," the sherif's office says. "If it seems to good to be true then it probably is."
