Residents are sharply divided over the planned Lewis Park location, citing traffic, flooding, and loss of soccer fields, while school leaders weigh broader student access before agreeing to help fund the project.

Overgrown cemetery, believed to date back to 1800s, hidden in the middle of Fayetteville (5newsonline.com) — An overgrown family cemetery from the 1800s sits hidden just off College Avenue in the middle of Fayetteville, raising questions about who should care for it. Cemetery conservationist Bob Young says Skelton Cemetery holds ties to early Fayetteville families, including a Revolutionary War veteran, but is stuck between county ownership and city reluctance to maintain it. He’s offering to teach residents how to safely help preserve its fragile headstones.

3. 88-year-old Army vet. competes in 7 athletic events at National Veterans Golden Age Games (nwahomepage.com) — An 88-year-old Fayetteville Army veteran, Patricia “Pat” Groce, is in Tampa this week competing in seven events at the National Veterans Golden Age Games, already winning two gold medals in track. A longtime member of the Fayetteville-area RazorVets team, she credits daily exercise and careful attention to her health for staying competitive and plans to return next year.

4. Gov. Sanders approves $5M in state funding for Center of Excellence for Food Science and Innovation (stuttgartdailyleader.com) — State leaders have approved $5 million to help build the University of Arkansas’ new Center of Excellence for Food Science and Innovation in Fayetteville, adding to $30 million in earlier federal support. Planned near Garland Avenue and Cassatt Street, the 62,000-square-foot facility will replace the current food science building, expand labs and classrooms, and boost research that supports Arkansas agriculture, food businesses, and workforce training.

Oral History archive added to new Levon Helm exhibit at Alexander Gallery (fayettevilleflyer.com) — Fayetteville art lovers can explore a Levon Helm exhibit at Walton Arts Center’s Alexander Gallery that now includes a rich oral history archive from the Pryor Center. Visitors can hear stories from musicians, friends, and Arkansas locals who knew Helm, and access additional interviews online, with the show open in town through September 6.
