1 Dead, 1 Injured In Avalanche At CA Ski Resort

LAKE TAHOE, CA — One man was killed and another seriously injured in an avalanche Friday at a ski resort in Northern California, the Placer County Sheriff's office said.

The victim was identified as Cole Comstock, 34, of Blairsden, the sheriff's office said.

The sheriff's office first announced the avalanche near the Subway ski run at 11:20 a.m., saying several people were unaccounted for at Alpine Meadows-Squaw Valley ski resort, several miles west of Lake Tahoe.

The search was called off by 12:50 p.m. after rescuers confirmed there were no additional victims, the sheriff's office said.

A storm dropped up to 25 inches of snow on the resort Thursday, the National Weather Service said, with up to two feet of snow falling in the surrounding mountains over a 24-hour stretch. The Sierra Avalanche Center had issued a warning for dangerous avalanche conditions at all elevations, the Associated Press reported.

The resort remained open Friday, but an area near the Subway ski run was closed, according to the sheriff's office.
