3 CA Laws That Take Effect July 1

Laws affecting school schedules and ghost gun regulation will take effect in July in the Golden State. What to know.

CALIFORNIA — Gov. Gavin Newsom signed hundreds of bills into law last October. On Monday, three of those new laws will take effect.

The laws affect school schedules and gun restriction in California. Here's a look at the laws coming to the Golden State this summer.

Senate Bill 328

To ensure California's students get enough rest and are not asked to wake up too early for classes, effective Monday, middle schools cannot start before 8 a.m. For high schoolers, classes may not start earlier than 8:30 a.m.

SB 328 exempts rural school districts but it includes charter schools, according to the bill text.

The bill will also urge the California Department of Education to post information and research on its website on the impact of sleep deprivation on adolescents. Schools will also be asked to post similar information on the benefits of a later start time.

Assembly Bill 1621

Tightening laws around gun control became even more of a hot button issue following the deadliest shooting at an elementary school in a decade. In the wake of the mass shooting in Uvalde, Texas, AB-1621 would address unserialized ghost guns.

The bill would take aim at the production of ghost guns, largely untraceable guns that are assembled at home. It would target production by restricting the sale of gun kits and parts used to create these firearms.

Assembly Bill 1057

Along with AB 1621, this law aims to limit the presence of ghost guns in the state. AB 1057 will allow teachers, co-workers, law enforcement, employers and family members to ask a judge to seize ghost guns from a person they deem to be a danger to themselves or the public.
