SACRAMENTO, CA — After polls came to a close Tuesday night, early results showed most California voters supported Proposition 1, the ballot measure that would authorize the state to issue $11.25 billion in new bonds for affordable housing, homeownership programs and veterans housing assistance.

If approved, Proposition 1 would authorize $10 billion in general obligation bonds to fund affordable rental housing and homeownership programs. An additional $1.25 billion would fund a state program offering veterans financial assistance to purchase homes, farms or mobile homes. The measure is projected to help finance the construction of approximately 40,000 new homes and apartments and assist another 40,000 people in becoming homeowners.

Supporters say the measure would help increase the supply of affordable homes and give more Californians a chance to buy a home.

"This is California delivering," Gov. Gavin Newsom said when the agreement was announced in June.

Opponents, however, have said the state should use existing state budget revenues to fund affordable housing and veterans' programs instead of borrowing billions of dollars and add long-term debt.
