CA Company Recalls Tofu Product Possibly Contaminated With Ink

The company said the recalled product should not be consumed.

OAKLAND, CA — More than 10,000 cases of a tofu product manufactured by a Oakland-based company were recalled because the product may have been contaminated with ink.

On Aug. 7, Hodo voluntarily recalled its Chili Crisp Lightly Fried Tofu with UPC 850565007842 and best-by dates between May 15, 2026, and Nov. 7, 2026, which was distributed to 29 states, according to a report from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

The recall was issued "because printing ink from the product packaging may have migrated into the product," the company said in a statement on Aug. 31.

"The recall was initiated after Hodo observed discoloration during scale-up of a new product and promptly conducted additional testing of Lightly Fried Chili Crisp Tofu in printed film packaging with apparent similar results. Hodo is continuing to investigate the cause. Based on currently available information, Hodo is evaluating whether chili oil and heat may have contributed to potential migration from the printed film packaging into the product," the statement continued.

The company said the recalled product was distributed to wholesale distributors, retail locations, and directly to consumers from Jan. 16, 2026 to July 16, 2026.
