ANDERSON, CA — A Northern California man who has ties to right-wing activism was arrested after the discovery of his secret underground bunker and a large cache of weapons, authorities said.

Michael Jay Kamfolt, 40, is facing 11 weapons charges, including possession of a stolen firearm and armor penetrating ammunition, the California Highway Patrol said.

“This operation went far beyond an illegal grow," CHP Northern Division Chief John Pinoli said. "The combination of a hidden bunker and an alarming cache of illegal firearms and ammunition highlights the threat posed to public safety. I am proud of the tireless work of our Northern Division personnel that led to this arrest.”

After receiving a tip about a potential illegal cannabis operation in December 2025 in Anderson, Shasta County, officers began investigating by conducting air operations over the area. On Jan. 20, the CHP executed a search warrant of the property, which led to the discovery of the bunker.

The underground space is accessible through a 100-foot-long culvert. Once inside, officers found that it was equipped with power, ventilation, a concrete floor with built-in drainage as well as the necessary supplies to grow marijuana.

Along with thousands of rounds of ammunition, among the firearms seized were a sawed-off shotgun, three AR-15-style assault rifles, one with a destroyed serial number, and two firearms that were reported stolen, one in 2016 and the other in 1978 respectively. (CHP)

Inside, officers seized 13 firearms, four soft body armor vests, 30 high-capacity magazines and some 10,000 rounds of ammunition, including armor-piercing rounds. Among the firearms were a sawed-off shotgun, three AR-15 style assault rifles, one with a destroyed serial number, and two firearms reported stolen in 2016 and 1978 respectively.

Kamfolt was arrested on felony and misdemeanor charges. He was later released on bond, the Shasta Scout reported.

The Anderson resident is a well-known Make America Great Again activist in the area who has been present at protests and county Board of Supervisors meetings. He has repeatedly raised issues over voting fraud, the Scout reported.

In recent years, Shasta County has become a hotspot for conservatism and those who believe the 2020 election was stolen.

Kamfolt is also a supporter and friend of county supervisor Kevin Crye, who is also a strong MAGA advocate. According to the Shasta Scout, Kamfolt has said he is a good friend of Crye and would "do anything to help him out" while facing off against protestors outside of Crye's business in May of last year.

In a Facebook video posted after Kamfolt's arrest, Crye said “It came to my attention today that a supporter and I’ll even say a friend of mine was arrested last night, and my heart is truly broken.”

He said he was surprised by the news but asked people "not to rush judgement," and said "remember we are innocent until proven guilty."

The CHP's investigation is ongoing.
