CALIFORNIA — #PresidentNewsom was trending Wednesday on Twitter after Californians took to the social media site to commend Gov. Gavin Newsom's response to the new coronavirus pandemic, which has sickened some 16,000 Californians.

The #PresidentNewsom trend comes after #PresidentCuomo trended on Twitter last week, a reference to New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo. Nearly 150,000 people in his state have tested positive for COVID-19.

In California — where there are nearly twice as many registered Democrats as registered Republicans — a recent Microsoft News and Microsoft Research poll found Newsom's approval rating soared to 79 percent, the Seattle Post-Intelligencer reported last week.

The trend apparently started after Newsom made an appearance on MSNBC's The Rachel Maddow Show Tuesday and gave the public an update on efforts to secure protective gear for workers in California and possibly beyond.

Newsom has served at the helm of the Golden State since 2019.
