Geico Shutters All CA Locations, Hundreds Laid Off: Reports

The American insurance giant closed dozens of its offices, leaving swaths of Golden State workers without jobs.

CALIFORNIA — GEICO, longtime insurance giant, closed all of its 38 offices in California, according to multiple reports.

The company also ended insurance sales made over the phone through agents in California, the Sacramento Bee reported first.

GEICO has not publicly commented on the closures but told the Sacramento Bee that the company was not leaving the state.

Deputy Insurance Commissioner Michael Soller said that the state was following the company's actions in a statement.

"We are monitoring to make sure consumers are protected," he said.

The company is no longer offering in-person stores to buy insurance in the Golden State, GEICO's website shows.

Founded in 1936 as the Government Employees Insurance Company, the insurer was first founded to aid federal employees and enlisted military officers. It is now among the largest auto and home insurance companies in the nation.
