Popular Snack Recalled Over Salmonella Risk Originating From CA

A voluntary recall of several popular potato chip varieties is affecting products sold nationwide, and the source of the potential contamination is from a California dairy cooperative, according to a statement from the FDA on Tuesday.

Utz Quality Foods LLC is voluntarily recalling certain varieties of Zapp's and Dirty Potato Chips because the dry milk powder used for seasoning, which was sourced from California Dairies Inc., may be contaminated with salmonella, according to the announcement.

Utz is issuing the warning as a precaution, though the FDA noted that tests on several seasoned batches for salmonella were negative and no illnesses have been reported. The powder in question came from California Dairies Inc.

The recall includes select flavors of Zapp’s and Dirty brand potato chips due to a potential risk of Salmonella contamination linked to a seasoning ingredient supplied by a third party. While the seasoning tested negative before use, the company said it is acting out of an abundance of caution.

No illnesses have been reported in connection with the recalled products, according to the statement.

Salmonella can cause serious infections, particularly in young children, older adults and people with weakened immune systems. Symptoms may include fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.

The affected chips were distributed nationwide and may have been sold at major retailers, including three in California:

• Walmart
• Target
• 7-Eleven

The recall covers multiple sizes and flavors, including Zapp’s Bayou Blackened Ranch, Salt and Vinegar, Big Cheezy, and several Dirty brand varieties such as Salt and Vinegar, Maui Onion, and Sour Cream and Onion.

Consumers are advised not to eat the affected products and to discard them. Refunds are available through Utz customer service.

The recall is being conducted with the knowledge of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
