These Are The Best Hospitals In CA, U.S. News Says In New Ranking

Five California hospitals are among the nation's 20 best, according to the new 2026-2027 Best Hospitals ranking released Tuesday by U.S. News & World Report.

The Golden State hospitals that earned spots on the U.S. News Best Hospitals Honor Roll are:

• Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, Los Angeles
• Stanford Health Care-Stanford Hospital, Palo Alto
• UC San Diego Health-La Jolla, Hillcrest, and East Campus Medical Centers
• UCLA Ronald Reagan Medical Center, Los Angeles
• UCSF Health-UCSF Medical Center, San Francisco

The annual report, now in its 37th year, is intended to help patients compare hospitals when they need anything from a common procedure, such as a knee replacement, to specialized treatment for a serious or complex illness.

This year, U.S. News also introduced regional specialty rankings for cancer; cardiology, heart and vascular surgery; orthopedics; and rehabilitation, giving patients another way to identify highly rated care closer to home.

Stanford Health Care-Stanford Hospital in Palo Alto ranked No. 9 nationally for cancer. Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles ranked No. 4 and Stanford Health Care-Stanford Hospital ranked No. 9 for cardiology, heart and vascular surgery.

Cedars-Sinai Medical Center ranked No. 5, UCSF Health-UCSF Medical Center in San Francisco ranked No. 6, and Stanford Health Care-Stanford Hospital ranked No. 8 for orthopedics. For rehabilitation, Santa Clara Valley Medical Center in San Jose ranked No. 8 nationally.

U.S. News also reduced or eliminated the weight given to several measures involving hospital size, staffing, technology and reputation. The changes were especially significant in cardiology, heart and vascular surgery, where patient outcomes now determine most of a hospital's score.
