The person who texts while driving, takes their eyes off the road an average of six seconds. Careening along at 65 MPH, in a 2,000 lb steel missile, with other, massive vehicular projectiles within feet of you, NO WONDER PEOPLE ARE KILLED due to distracted driving and lack of focus.
Perhaps you know who Nik Wallenda is? Famous tight-rope walker. He recently walked across the entire span of Niagara Falls. The winds were ferocious, the spray of water and clouds made sight difficult.
Look at what he said:
“I never focus on the 200ft. below me, the winds blowing from each side or the clouds blocking my view. I focus on the other side! We all have to focus on the other side, not the problems hitting you at every step.” --Nik Wallenda
As many other readers have, I have been on a wellness and health journey since the first of the year. Now, five months in, I have made some progress, but have also had some stuck places, harder places, discouraging places.
For the first four months, I was ON IT; keeping a food diary, tracking my weight and body fat percentages, sticking to an exercise program.
Then, I noticed my focus lagging and predictably, my numbers started inching the wrong way.
The need to be healthy hadn’t changed.
The opportunity to become healthy hadn’t changed.
What had changed?
My focus!
In the New Testament, when Peter was in a storm-tossed boat on the Sea of Galilee and Jesus came walking toward the boat on top of the water, Jesus invited Peter to step into the water and walk on water to HIM. Peter did.
What exhilaration.
What a thrill.
What a miracle and memory and achievement!
And then notice:
“So Peter went over the side of the boat and walked on the water toward Jesus. 30 But when he saw the strong wind and the waves, he was terrified and began to sink. “Save me, Lord!” he shouted.” Matthew 14:29, 30
At first Peter was looking at Jesus, but he began to sink the moment he lost his focus. He became distracted by the wind and the waves.
What does it take to accomplish something great for God and great in life? It takes focus!
For every relationship dream that started well and failed, for every failed business or every experience of faltering faith, there are people lined up confessing: I LOST SIGHT OF WHAT MATTERED. Not the only key, but certainly an important key to success is the determination and discipline to stay FOCUSED.
