A little training can save your dog's life!

Every dog needs basic training and daily activity to be happy and healthy, and sometimes that training can also save their life.

Did you know that one of the main reasons dogs end up in shelters is because of a lack of training?  Aside from helping your dog to be more comfortable in your home, basic training commands like “sit/wait” or “leave it” can even save your dog's life.

If your dog bolts for the great outdoors every time you open the front door, training him to sit calmly and wait well inside the door can make life easier for both of you and reduces the risks of your dog running away.

By training your dog to “sit” or “wait” on command, you can also protect him from potential accidents.  We use the "wait" command to insure our dogs stay on the curb until it's clear to cross the street or pass a driveway.  Having your dog sit and wait can also be beneficial at the vet or groomers, when dogs tend to look for cover under seats and tables.

“Leave it” is another command that could save your dog’s life, especially if you enjoy hiking with your pup on some of our local trails.  Training a curious pooch to “leave it” can be a major benefit it preventing snake bites as well as in avoiding potential poisoning when medications or even a chocolate bar accidentally drops on the floor.

Training teaches your dog what behavior is expected of him and rewards him for a job well done.  It also stimulates your dog's brain, preventing the boredom that often results in destructive play.  And contrary to the popular adage, old dogs can learn “new tricks,” too, as long as the training techniques are positively reinforced and done on a consistent basis.

Training your pooch is easy to do, especially with the right tools and proper instruction.  To demonstrate just how it easy it is to have a well-behaved dog, Camp Bow Wow Agoura Hills is hosting a special Yappy Hour on Friday, January 25, from 5pm to 7pm to address basic dog training techniques.  We'll be providing free training clickers and leashes as well as drinks and snacks for those interested in learning how to turn their good dog into a GREAT dog with some basic training.  I hope to see you there...
