The Santa Monica Mountains area had a busy week. Take a look at some of the top stories nearby and countywide.

AGOURA HILLS, CA – It's been a busy week for the Santa Monica Mountains area. Malibu's ban on single-use plastic went into effect today – City Council voted in February to prohibit the sale and distribution of single-use plastic, such as cutlery, stirrers, and straws.

In politics, a draft of Malibu's "Strategic Plan on Homelessness" was presented to the public. The draft lists seven goals and 40 specific actions to achieve them.

Malibu's Mayor Pro Tem Jefferson Wagner was served warrants at his home and surf shop business. Wagner has faced questions about his eligibility to serve on the City Council, since the home is outside the city in an unincorporated area.

There was a huge multi-vehicle crash that shut down Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu, leaving six injured. Two people were airlifted from the scene and four were taken away in ambulances, the Los Angeles County Fire Department reported.

Los Angeles County was ordered to pay out $11.75 million in a lawsuit involving a sheriff's deputy who was texting while driving when he hit and killed a bicyclist in Calabasas in 2013.

The National Park Service is hosting events in Malibu and Calabasas for National Trails Day on June 2. The events will be at Zuma Canyon and Malibu Creek State Park. Volunteers will work to protect, maintain, and beautify public trails.

The dog was stolen over the weekend in Downey, but found safe and sound in Anaheim days later. "Marcee is home!!!!!!" the dog owner wrote on Facebook.

The Lightning in a Bottle festival happened over Memorial Day weekend, and it was surely unique. "Sign the unicorn. Have you signed the unicorn? Sign the unicorn!" For four days, my camping neighbor pleaded to passersby with a marker in hand, seated in a large unicorn-shaped pool toy that was jerry rigged to the hood of his SUV.
