Blog: Thursday Night 9 P.M., PBS Premiers The Moving New Film, 'Space Shuttle Columbia: Mission Of Hope,' In Conjunction With The 10th Anniversary Of The Columbia Disaster
The Film Tells The Little-Known Story Of Columbia Astronaut Ilan Ramon, The Son Of Holocaust Survivors Who Became Israel 's First Astronaut.
Many of us can remember where we were when major disasters struck our country. Ten years ago, almost to the day, is when the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster left a mark in our collective memories.
To document this tragic event, PBS brings us a new and compelling film, Space Shuttle Columbia: Mission Of Hope, Thursday night at 9 p.m. (check local listings). This film is especially poignant, because it carried Ilan Ramon, an Israeli Astronaut and the son of Holocaust survivors.
From the depths of hell to the heights of space, this documentary tells the compelling, untold story of a crewmember’s determination to fulfill his “mission within a mission” aboard the space shuttle Columbia. Learn how and why a small Torah scroll that survived the Holocaust was entrusted to Israeli astronaut Ilan Ramon as he lifted into space on Columbia’s ultimately ill-fated flight.
