Blog Post: 'Silents Under the Stars' Celebrates 25 Years: Three Great Evenings Of Movies And More

One of my favorite summer events at the Paramount Ranch is approaching, so mark your calendars.

It's that time of year again–Silents Under the Stars–and it's now celebrating it's 25th year at the . If you still don't know to what I'm referring, it's literally silent films which are screened outside, complete with live piano accompaniment.

This is absolutely one of my favorite things to do during the summer so SAVE THE DATES. And to make it a perfect outing, you can also take the free walking tour of a small part of the ranch with my good friend, Marc Wanamaker, one of the most well respected Hollywood historians.

Marc first gives you a short lecture on the history of the Paramount Ranch which was purchased in 1926. He also shows you the vistas overlooking the area and describes the various sets and famous films that were shot at the ranch. The tour is about one hour long and guests should wear sensible shoes due to the gravel and the hike is about one mile.

So, if you loved last years silent film The Artist and want to get more familiar with silent cinema, I suggest you come to all three. However, if you want something different to do with the kids, then join us for the Harold Lloyd evening on August 5th.

Leave the young kids at home, however, for Clara Bow's Man Trap. Her films were racy even for the 1920s. Coincidentally I'll be catching that same film in San Francisco the weekend of July 12th for one of my all-time favorite annual events - THE SAN FRANCISCO SILENT FILM FESTIVAL (email me if you'd like to learn more about that one).

I will be at the Ranch though for this rare screening of Woman of the World, starring silent film vamp Pola Negri. Come by and say 'hi' if you read my blog.

Below is the full schedule....AND don't forget to bring a flashlight along. It gets dark in these Agoura Hills. All evenings include a comedy short or cartoon before the feature.

  • Sunday, July 22, at 8 p.m. Man Trap (1926) starring Clara Bow
  • Sunday, August 5, at 7:30 p.m. For Heaven’s Sake (1926) starring Harold Lloyd and Jobyna Ralston
