Chargers Score Five Runs In The Seventh To Win

Agoura High rallies from a steep hole to beat Canyon 7-6 in the Valley Invitational Baseball League—its second win in a row. Mark Seyler starts the game-winning rally with a double and Corey Rohm drives in the game-winning run.

Sitting in the dugout on Monday afternoon, Agoura High's Jordan Shulman appeared to be extremely relaxed, seemingly without a care in the world as he prepared, both mentally and physically, for his scheduled start against Canton.

"I'm good to go, I feel really good, ready to throw some strikes out there,'' the right-hander said before taking the mound.

And Shulman did just that early on, keeping the opposing batters off-balance in in the early innings of a Valley Invitational Baseball League game.

Problem was, he struggled mightily late before his teammates bailed him out, the Chargers scoring five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning en route to a 7-6 come-from-behind victory over the visiting Cowboys.

"What a game. Shulman owes the guys after this one,'' Agoura coach Dennis Reitz said. "The kids never gave up. It was good stuff. Afterward, we all took a minute or two and just enjoyed the moment. We had to.''

Trailing 5-2, Mark Seyler started the seventh-inning rally for Agoura (2-7) with a double. Tyler Cohen followed with a walk, Sam Gerald added a base hit and Shulman helped his cause and delivered a run-scoring sacrifice fly.

A couple of batters later, Brody Fehmel singled. Corey Rohm drove in the game-winner.

No one was more relieved than Shulman.

"That was a close game, too close. Jordan and the rest of the guys made things hard on themselves,'' Reitz said. "You know, there was a time when we would do things to keep us from winning games like these."

"Thankfully, all that stuff is changing. The kids are starting to believe in themselves. Good teams find a way to win and we're becoming one of those good teams, finally," he said. "I couldn't be more proud of this group of guys. They're beginning to step up.''

The timing couldn't be better. The Chargers opened VIBL play sluggishly, losing their first seven games. Since then, Agoura has turned things around and won two in a row heading into a game Wednesday at Sylmar.

"We're turning the corner and I'm tickled to death,'' Reitz said. "It doesn't matter how the game started or the how we played during the middle innings. We made adjustments and picked up the win. That's what matters.''
