Forum to Examine U.S. Embargo's Impact on Cuban People

The Rev. Joseph Barndt, a representative of Pastors for Peace, will discuss the impact of the U.S. economic blockade and travel ban on the people of Cuba at a Community Forum in Newbury Park at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, July 12.

Rev. Barndt, a Lutheran minister, consultant and author, will talk about the organization’s Friendshipment Caravan, which this summer will send construction and medical supplies to Santiago de Cuba, hit hard by Hurricane Sandy.

Pastors for Peace is a ministry of the Interreligious Foundation for Community Organization (IFCO), founded in 1967 by religious leaders and activists. Since 1988, Pastors for Peace Friendshipment caravans to Mexico, Central America and Cuba have delivered humanitarian aid as part of IFCO’s mission to support the poor and disenfranchised and fight injustices.

Pastors for Peace contends that the U.S. embargo against Cuba is an immoral policy that uses hunger and disease as political weapons. It says the embargo causes shortages of food, medicine and other important supplies for 11 million people.

Rev. Barndt, author of the book “Dismantling Racism,” will talk about the U.S. embargo in a program that is open to the public. Similar events will be taking place in 35 cities across the country during Caravan Week to raise public awareness and solicit support for the aid effort.
