Local television icon Dr. George Fischbeck will discuss and sign his new book Dr. George: My Life in Weather on Sunday, May 5 at 2 PM at Barnes & Noble Thousand Oaks.
A much-loved fixture on local television for nearly three decades, George Fischbeck did not set out to be a television weatherman. His autobiography tells the story of a junior high school science teacher in Albuquerque, New Mexico whose videotaped science lessons on the local public television station led to a second job as weatherman for another local station, KOB. When KOB's ratings zoomed, a rival station's news director sought to hire Dr. George - and failing that, surreptitously sent videotapes of his weathercasts to stations in other markets, hoping they'd hire him away! The ploy worked, and Fischbeck and his family were soon on their way to Los Angeles, where his sincerity, enthusiasm, and deep knowledge of his subject made him an instant celebrity and sent KABC's Eyewitness News to the top of the ratings.
Dr. George: My life in Weather is a must-read for anyone interseted in the evolution of television news in Los Angeles in the last years of the 20th century, as well as for those who fondly remember the genial science teacher who changed the face of television weathercasting in Los Angeles.
