Faith, Hope and Science Community Forum Set
Rev. Michael Dowd, an eco-theologian, will discuss how science and religion must work together for the future of humankind at a forum.
The Rev. Michael Dowd, who calls himself an eco-theologian and pro-science evangelist, will talk about how science and religion must work together for the future of humankind at a Community Forum in Newbury Park at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 28.
Dowd's talk, "Faithful to the Future: Inspiring Science, Evolving Faith, Realistic Hope," will be presented at the Conejo Valley Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, 3327 Old Conejo Road in the Song Bird office park (enter at Ruth Drive).
Dowd's message will be that science and religion are not enemies and that, given humans' impact on Earth, the seas and other species, they must join together in an inspired way in the face of changing climate and other large-scale challenges. His presentation will focus on six points of agreement held in common by tens of millions of religious and non-religious people across the globe.

Dowd maintains that humanity is about to face what could be called The Great Reckoning, but the good news is that science has identified the dangers of climate change, so it could also be The Great Homecoming with a prodigal species coming home to reality.
Dowd was a United Church of Christ minister for nine years and is a graduate of Eastern Baptist Theological Seminary (now Palmer Theological Seminary) in Philadelphia. He received his B.A. degree in biblical studies and philosophy from Evangel University in Springfield, Mo. (affiliated with the Assemblies of God). He describes himself as once traditionally religious and now a “born-again evolutionary evangelist.”

Dowd, in his writings and talks across the U.S., shows how religious texts and tradition can be reconciled with what has been revealed through scientific inquiry. He authored the 2008 book, "Thank God for Evolution," and he has created the digital audio course, "The Advent of Evolutionary Christianity."
