London Comes Up Big for the Chargers

Agoura High's sophomore receiver catches two touchdowns in the loss to Newbury Park and steps up in place of an injured safety.

Sophomore Kyle London caught eight passes for 95 yards and two touchdowns Friday in Agoura High 's 42-20 loss to Newbury Park.

While London had a big game on offense, coach Charlie Wegher said he made two big plays on defense that could have easily changed the momentum of the game.

London started at free safety in place of Julian Patton, who was sitting out while recovering from a concussion and a foot injury from the previous week's game against Moorpark.

London almost intercepted two passes in the end zone. He knocked down both passes, but Newbury Park eventually scored on both possessions.

"Both in the end zone," Wegher said. "They would have made a big difference in the game."

Patton is expected back Friday against Thousand Oaks. London can go back to focusing on offense.

Agoura stayed close to Newbury Park for the first two quarters of the game and trailed 14-13 at halftime. Newbury Park opened the second half with a touchdown to take a 21-13 lead. Agoura then turned the ball over on its next possession when quarterback Gerard Poutier threw an interception to Newbury Park's A.J. Reed at the Agoura 10-yard line. Newbury Park scored again to take a 28-13 lead and started pulling away.

Wegher said the interception in the third quarter tilted the game in favor of Newbury Park.

"We hadn't really been able to stop them," Wegher said. "The interception right in the early part of the third quarter was a big momentum changer. We weren't able to recover. They had a good game plan."

Wegher said he wanted to see his team play better against the run. Agoura held Newbury Park to 148 rushing yards, one of its better efforts this season. Newbury Park quarterback Jake Geringer rushed for 80 yards and two touchdowns on 13 carries. The rest of the Newbury Park team gained only 68 yards on 22 carries.

Wegher also wanted to see his team run the ball better. Kevin Beams gained 43 yards on seven carries, running plays out of the Wildcat and the option, in the best rushing effort from an Agoura running back all season. Poutier rushed for 77 yards in a loss to Simi Valley two weeks ago.

Agoura receiver Corey Da Silva came up with some big plays, catching a 51-yard touchdown pass in the fourth quarter. He caught four passes for 111 yards and was also a factor on defense.

Da Silva was called upon to cover Newbury Park's explosive receiver Dakota Dunlea. Dunlea caught three passes for 84 yards and a touchdown. In Newbury Park's game against Moorpark, Dunlea caught 10 passes for 256 yards and two touchdowns.

"Corey played his mind out," Wegher said, adding that Da Silva has an injured shoulder and played through pain. "He had a good game."
