Dr. Therdchai Jivacate, at 79, has some patients other orthopedic surgeons never encounter – elephants. Besides to providing 15,000 artificial legs for free to impoverished amputees through the Prostheses Foundation he founded under sponsorship from Thailand’s Princess Mother Srinagarindra in 1992, Dr. Therdchai also developed and fits prostheses for elephants who have lost a limb, usually to a landmine.
Dr. Therdchai has been lauded for his use of local, inexpensive materials--starting with discarded plastic yogurt bottles--to make high quality, low-cost prosthesis. In addition, Dr. Therdchai established the first occupational therapy educational institution at Chiang Mai University in northern Thailand. Truly an individual of diverse talents and enormous compassion.
