Meet An “Amazing” Who Has A Passion For Science
Jean-Marie Lehn, 81, Nobel Prize winner, continues to conduct research in the field of organic chemistry.

Jean-Marie Lehn, at 81, continues to conduct research in the field of organic chemistry, having published over his long career some 900 professional papers with his team. Jean-Marie was awarded the 1987 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, shared with Donald J. Cram and Charles J. Pedersen “for their development and use of molecules with structure-specific interactions of high selectivity.” Jean-Marie has taught all over the world at prestigious universities and received numerous honors over the years. But what is perhaps most astonishing are his humble beginnings.
Born in a small village in France, son of a baker who became the city organist (!), Jean-Marie helped his mom run the bakery, and became himself an accomplished organist. But once he discovered organic chemistry in his first couple of years at college, he knew he’d found his calling. Starting with the small lab he set up at home, Jean-Marie took the steps that eventually led him to the Nobel Prize. Passion and persistence are indeed a winning combination.
