Pierce Brothers Valley Oaks Hosts Community Shred Event; Helps Combat Identity Theft

Responding to the ongoing need to securely dispose of personal documents, Pierce Brothers Valley Oaks – Griffin Memorial Park, a local Dignity Memorial® provider, will host a free Community Shred Event, Saturday, March 4, from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Residents from around the Conejo Valley are encouraged to bring up to four boxes of paper documents to be shredded at no charge.

“Identity theft can be emotionally devastating, especially among elderly victims who are among the most vulnerable individuals,” said Tamara Eacker, manager of Pierce Brothers Valley Oaks – Griffin Memorial Park. “Our Community Shred Event helps our community members protect themselves, and highlights our commitment to working with local businesses to enhance the safety and security of our neighbors.”

Paper of any kind will be accepted, even with staples and paper clip. Binders, CDs, DVDs or other media, however, will not be accepted. The Community Shredding Event will be held at Pierce Brothers Valley Oaks – Griffin Memorial Park, 5600 Lindero Canyon Road, Westlake Village, CA 91362. “In addition to shredding confidential and personal documents, there are a number of precautions we can all take to prevent identity theft, like these tips from local law enforcement officials,” added Eacker.

• Keep personal and identifying information locked in a safe.
• Use a post office box for mail or make arrangements with the post office to have mail delivered directly to the door.
• Always take outgoing mail to the post office or to a mailbox.
• Don’t carry social security cards in a purse or wallet.
• Don’t include your home phone number, social security number, driver’s license number, or date of birth on your checks.
• When paying credit card bills by check, write only the last four digits of the account number on the check memo line.
