Re-Chargers Getting A Short Break from Schedule

Agoura High football team, which has fared well in a long summer of passing leagues and tournaments, gets some well deserved time off before two-a-days start Aug. 17.

The Agoura High football team has had a busy summer competing in 7-on-7 passing tournaments, seemingly on a weekly basis, and the Chargers have enjoyed a fair amount of success.

Now, comes a well-deserved break.

The Chargers are in the midst of a three-week layoff following the passing tournament they hosted last weekend. Among the teams that competed were Marmonte League rivals Calabasas, Moorpark, Newbury Park, Simi Valley and Westlake, as well as Ventura Country programs Camarillo and Oak Park.

Agoura won its first three games of the tournament, defeating Calabasas, Moorpark and Oak Park in the morning session. The Chargers, however, ran into a bit of trouble later in the afternoon and ended up losing to Camarillo in the semifinals.

Westlake defeated the Scorpions in the championship game.

"We played well at our tournament,'' Agoura receiver Kevin Beams said. "We were in a rhythm and moving the ball well. We were picking up yards in chunks, just romping down the field against everyone. Camarillo was a tough loss.

"We've put in a lot of work the past two months, and at our tournament, we started to see the results of all that extra work. It's been a busy summer.''

The grueling summer schedule began with the Under the Lights tournament hosted by Saugus in early June. Agoura attended the Conejo Valley Classic and won the consolation championship, then it was one to a tournament at Valley College a week later.

"We're happy with the progress we've made, we're heading in right direction.'' Coach Charlie Wegher said. "At this stage of the game, our thinking is this time off will give everyone a chance to recharge the batteries and come back stronger.''

Wegher said he hopes his players will remain in decent physical condition during their time away from the gridiron. The plan is for a healthy Agoura group to return to the field and begin two-a-day practices on Aug. 17.

"No more football for a while and that's good a really good thing because me and some of my friends are planning to go to Raging Waters today,'' Beams said. "We worked every day and were getting a little burnt out anyway.

"It's time have a little fun and then come back ready and focused. We're all on the same page. When it's time for football again, we'll pick up where we left off. ''
