What is the Purpose of Dental Crowns?

Dental crowns are one of the more useful treatments in dentistry today. Our cosmetic dentist in Thousand Oaks can use dental crowns for restorative purposes or cosmetic purposes. We can also use them to replace missing teeth.

If you have a tooth that is misshapen, severely discolored, damaged or decayed, a dental crown can cover it and protect it from further damage. Teeth that have undergone root canal therapy tend to be more brittle and prone to breakage than other teeth, but crowns restore their strength, function and beauty. Crowns can support dental bridges when a tooth is lost, or they can be used with dental implants to provide you with a dental restoration that is virtually identical to your own natural teeth.

Candidates for crowns may need about two appointments to have their restoration placed. The tooth upon which the crown will fit needs to be prepared. The tooth will be shaped, and enamel will be removed to provide space for the crown. A temporary crown will protect the tooth until the permanent crown is ready to be cemented into place. Dental crowns can last a decade or more when properly cleaned and maintained. Give us a call today to learn more or to schedule your appointment with our expert in porcelain crowns in Thousand Oaks.
