What You Should and Should Not Do After Teeth Whitening

What you do and don't do after a whitening treatment can affect how long the results would last.

Teeth whitening can lighten your teeth and bleach long-standing stains. Our cosmetic dentist in Agoura Hills offers powerful in-office whitening procedures that are designed to quickly and efficiently give you the smile of your dreams. However, what you do right after whitening can make a big difference in your whitening results.

Dos

1. Brush and floss carefully.
Keeping your teeth clean can help you prevent stains from penetrating your enamel again.

2. Use a straw.
Straws limit contact between your teeth and drinks that could stain them. After drinking, rinse with water to further reduce the risk of new stains.

3. Eat a healthy diet.
Processed, starchy and sugary foods and artificial dyes can quickly stain and damage teeth. Focus on a diet rich in nutrient-dense foods such as vegetables, fruits, whole grains, low-fat protein and low-fat dairy products for the healthiest smile.

Don’ts

1. Avoid red wine, coffee, dark chocolate, soda, juice, energy drinks and other things that could stain your teeth for a few weeks after your whitening treatment. These foods are more likely to stain and can drag your smile down quickly if you start enjoying them too soon after your teeth whitening.

2. Skip the lipstick for a few days. The dyes it contains can quickly re-stain teeth.

3. Store the OTC teeth whiteners for at least a month after treatment. Professional whitening is powerful, and using an OTC whitener or touch-up kits too soon after a whitening treatment could leave you with sensitive teeth or worse.
