Which Is Best: A Roundabout or a Regular Intersection with Traffic Signal?

That's the question the Agoura Hills City Council will debate Wednesday when members discuss the Agoura-Kanan roads intersection.

Should the intersection of Kanan and Agoura roads be a roundabout or just a regular ol’ intersection with a traffic signal?

The City Council will consider that its 6 p.m. meeting Wednesday.

The project has been planned for a roundabout, but in May, council members expressed concerns about the larger-than-expected size of the improvement project and the impact to nearby properties, according to a staff report.

So a report the council will hear Wednesday compares the two.

The roundabout would take up more than acre of combined space on the southeast and southwest corners, according to staff. A regular intersection would require .16 acres.

A roundabout would cost $5 million to construct, while a traditional intersection would cost $1.9 million, staff say.

An intersection with a traffic signal will have greater impacts on oak trees than a roundabout, according to staff. A traditional intersection would impact oaks on the north and south side of the west leg.

Meanwhile, a roundabout would only impact oaks on the south side of the west leg, staff say.

The report does not make a recommendation but asks the council to decide which is the best way to proceed.
