20 Downy Ducklings And Mallard Mama: Alameda Photos Of The Day
Eddy Lehrer photographed this remarkable scene at Harbor Bay Island in Alameda.
ALAMEDA, CA — Eddy Lehrer snapped this series of charming photos of a mama Mallard duck and her 20 — count them — ducklings!
"I took photos of these baby Mallard ducks at one of the lagoons at Harbor Bay Island in Alameda," Eddy told Patch. "This mother has 20 baby ducks. I did some research and normally the maximum number in a clutch of baby Mallard ducks is 12-13 so it is likely that this mother has adopted the additional babies. Sometimes baby ducks are abandoned when the mother panics and flees or the mother may be dead."
How fortunate for these ducklings that this mama was available to rescue them. Perhaps we can call them lucky ducks!
Thank you for your photos and research, Eddy.
