A Look Into Alameda's Egret Colony

The program will feature a short slide show, talk at the Bay Farm Island Library and walk over to a nearby rockery to watch some of the local birds.

Bay Farm Island Library is hosting a special program that looks into the lives of our local Egret colony.

Wildlife in Our Midst: A look Into Alameda's Egret Colony will be held at the Bay Farm Island Library, located at 3221 Mecartney Rd. on Sunday, May 19 at 2 p.m.

San Francisco Bay Bird Observatory (SFBBO) Outreach Coordinator Kristin Butler G Citizen Scientist Cindy Margulis will talk about the local egret colony followed by a group viewing of these extraordinary birds and their new chicks.

The program will feature a short slide show and talk mostly about our egrets on Bay Farm for about 30 minutes. The group will then we'll walk over to see the birds at the nearby rookery. Attendees should bring binoculars, if they have them, to get a good view of the birds.

Since 2007, biologists and volunteers of SFBBO have monitored the Gret Egrets and Snowy Egrets while the bred and nested in trees in Alameda's local neighborhoods as apart of an ongoing, Bay-wide project to study Colonial Waterbird populations in the region.

Note: Although the library is usually closed on Sunday, it will be open on May 19 just for this program.
