Alameda Electricity Rates Set to Increase Starting in July

The exact increase will vary depending on the customer's rate class.

Starting next month, residents in the city of Alameda will see their electricity rates increase, Alameda Municipal Power announced Thursday. Rates for most of the company’s 79,000 residential and commercial customers are set to increase on July 1, according to AMP officials.

While the rate increase will average 4.6 percent across all customers, the exact increase will vary depending on the customer’s rate class, which is based on the customer’s usage history, according to AMP officials. Nearly all customers will see a $2.25 increase to the customer charge with small changes to the energy charges for customers in the tiers 2 and 3 rate class, AMP officials said.

Small commercial customers will see an increase of 6.4 percent to the overall electric rate while medium-size commercial customers will see an increase of 3 percent, according to AMP officials. Large commercial customers will see an increase of 6.2 percent. The changes in rates reflect the rising costs of providing high quality, reliable electricity to the city.

Some of those challenges include increases in operating costs and higher transmission costs, AMP officials said. AMP continues to offer residential rates that average nearly 22 percent lower than neighboring cities like San Leandro and Berkeley and commercial rates that average nearly 18 percent lower, according to AMP.

AMP also provides electricity that is generally far more reliable than that or its neighboring communities, according to AMP officials. For more information about the rate increase, customers can visit www.alamedamp.com.
