Alameda Schools' Truancy Rate Slightly Below State Average
What should educators do to tackle this issue?

About a fourth of Alameda public school students were reported as truant at least once during the past school year, according to information released by the state superintendent's office.
The district's 26 percent rate is slightly below both the state and the county average.
Truancy is defined as any student who misses 30 minutes or more of class time without a valid excuse at least three times in one school year.

Not surprisingly, high schools have the highest truancy rates.
The state data shows 73 percent of Encinal High students were reported as truant during the 2011-2012 school year.

At the middle schools, the truancy rate ranged from a low of 5.7 percent at Lincoln to 47 percent at Will C. Wood.
In the elementary schools, the truancy rate ranged from a low of 0.3 percent at Amelia Earhart to 22 percent at William G. Paden.
