Alameda Student Advances To State Junior High Spelling Bee

More than 50 students competed in the annual competition.

ALAMEDA COUNTY, CA — An Alameda middle schooler will be one of two students representing Alameda County in the State Junior High Spelling Bee in San Rafael in May. Hazel Pruins, who attends Lincoln Middle School, took second place at the annual Alameda County Junior High Spelling Bee.

The Core Learning Department of the Alameda County Office of Education hosted the annual event at Canyon Middle School on March 10. More than 50 students competed in the annual competition, representing 10 Alameda County districts.

Elementary Spelling Bee winners:

1st place: Vivian Le, 5th grade, Glenmoor Elementary (Fremont USD)
2nd place: Olayenni Elenitoba-Johnson, 5th grade, Snow Elementary (Newark USD)
3rd place: Saskia Lee, 5th grade, Crocker Highlands Elementary (Oakland USD)
4th place: Adriana Argyriou, 5th grade, Haight Elementary (Alameda USD)
Vivian and Olayenni will represent Alameda County at the State Elementary Spelling Bee on May 12 at the San Joaquin County Office of Education in Stockton.

Junior High Spelling Bee winners:
1st place: Anisha Rao, 7th grade, Fallon Middle School (Dublin USD)
2nd place: Hazel Pruins, 8th grade, Lincoln Middle School (Alameda USD)
3rd place: Isabel Enriquez, 8th grade, Canyon Middle School (Castro Valley USD)
4th place: Lily Engelsgjerd, 7th grade, Joe Mitchell Middle School (Livermore USD)
Anisha and Hazel will represent Alameda County at the State Junior High Spelling Bee on May 5 at Miller Creek Middle School in San Rafael.
