Alameda's $75K Hiring Bonus Draws New Police Officers In Record Numbers
The City expects all patrol positions to be filled by mid-year.
ALAMEDA, CA — Alameda drew national attention last spring when the City Council approved a $75,000 hiring bonus for police officers to bolster the force's depleted numbers amidst a. highly competitive hiring market.
City Manager Jennifer Ott used past salary savings instead of new funding to create the incentive, the highest-in-the-nation.
The City reported this week that by June, the Alameda Police Department’s entire patrol division will be filled, reversing a 30 percent deficit in officers and improving response times, community outreach, traffic safety, and crime prevention.

The $75,000 hiring bonus has attracted qualified candidates from across the country, allowing the police department to be selective in hiring officers.
New officers receive the first $25,000 after being sworn in and an additional $50,000 after completing the field training program.
