OAKLAND, CA — Officers shot and killed a man they say pointed a gun at them in Oakland on Tuesday afternoon, according to authorities.

Officers responded to the scene and found the man, who pointed a gun at them, police said.

Officers requested backup as the man made his way into a backyard in the 1800 block of 89th Avenue, police said.

He pointed the gun at the officers again, and that's when the officers fired at him, police said.

It's unclear how many times the man was struck.

Police said the man was taken to a local hospital, where he later died. His identity was not immediately revealed.

The officers who fired their weapons will be placed on paid administrative leave as the department conducts its investigation into the shooting. There were several witnesses at the scene, including officers who will provide statements about what they saw, police said.

The Alameda County District Attorney’s Office and the Community Police Review Agency (CPRA) will conduct their own independent investigations, police said.

"The Oakland Police Department remains committed to transparency and understands community concerns," the department said in a statement. "To ensure the investigation’s integrity, information is limited at this time. More details will be shared as soon as the investigation allows, and in compliance with the law."
