The officers reported the man to the Oakland Police Department, which responded to the scene shortly after 2 p.m.

There, the Oakland officers encountered the man who police said refused to comply with commands, according to the Oakland Police Department.

At some point, the armed man lunged at the officers, who responded with "both less-lethal and lethal force," killing him, authorities said.

Police say officers recovered a weapon at the scene, but did not say what that weapon was. No other injuries were reported during the incident.

This was the third person shot by Oakland police this year.

The officers involved in the incident have been placed on paid administrative leave, as is procedure under the department's policy, authorities said.

The in-custody death will be investigated by the Oakland Police Department’s Homicide Section, OPD Internal Affairs Bureau, the Oakland City Police Commission, the Community Police Review Agency (CPRA), and the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office.
