Bay Bridge Overnight Closures Begin: What Drivers Need to Know

OAKLAND, CA — Caltrans will be shutting down several lanes on the San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge overnight for the next few months as it works to install a temporary bridge platform.

The platform will take until at least October to install, according to Caltrans, prompting overnight freeway closures from Sunday through Monday.

Workers need a Safe Span platform installed on the upper portion of the lower deck of the bridge so they can safely paint it, according to Caltrans.

The eastbound I-80 will be reduced to one lane starting on Monday night as part of the months-long project. Here's what time the lanes will be closed:

• Lane 1: SF Anchorage/Rincon Hill to Yerba Buena Island Tunnel — 10 p.m. to 7 a.m.
• Lane 2: SF Anchorage/Rincon Hill to Yerba Buena Island Tunnel — 11 p.m. to 7 a.m.
• Lane 3: SF Anchorage/Rincon Hill to Yerba Buena Island Tunnel — Midnight to 6 a.m.
• Lane 4: SF Anchorage/Rincon Hill to Yerba Buena Island Tunnel — 1 to 5 a.m. (Closes at 2 a.m. on Thursdays)

The closure is part of a larger effort to revitalize the bridge with repairs and paint. The project, launched in April, will improve the durability and long-term safety of the bridge, according to Caltrans.

The project is expected to be finished by 2031, according to Caltrans.
