Routine Traffic Stop Turns Into Drug Bust In Alameda: Police

ALAMEDA, CA — A routine traffic stop turned into a trip to jail for a driver in Alameda over the weekend, police said.

Police say the driver ran a stop sign at Haight Avenue and Webster Street, prompting officers to initiate a traffic stop.

Officers learned the driver was on probation and searched their vehicle, the Alameda Police Department said.

Inside the car were $2,000 in cash, a fake gun, suspected drugs, drug paraphernalia and items consistent with drug sales, police said.

The driver also had other people's social security cards and identification cards, police said.

The driver, whom police did not identify, was taken into custody on suspicion of possession of a controlled substance for sale and multiple other crimes, police said.

"This is a reminder that proactive traffic enforcement plays an important role in keeping our community safe," police said. "By addressing traffic violations and taking appropriate enforcement action, APD officers can not only help keep our roadways safe but also uncover and prevent other criminal activity before it impacts additional members of our community."
