The helpful individual, who was wounded in the leg, was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

Officers responded about 1:15 p.m. to a report of gunfire in the parking lot of the shopping center, police said.

The victim had been approached by a person who demanded their property, police said.

"When the victim refused, a struggle ensued," police said. "A good Samaritan who witnessed the incident attempted to intervene and assist the victim."

"During the struggle, a firearm was produced and discharged once, striking the good Samaritan in the leg," police said.

The first victim was treated at the scene and released, police said.

The investigation into the circumstances and events leading up to the incident was continuing, police said.
