70 Displaced, 4 Injured Following Early-Morning Apartment Fire In Oakland: Officials

OAKLAND, CA — An early-morning apartment three-alarm fire in Oakland left dozens without a home and four injured, including a child, authorities said.

It's unclear what caused the blaze. Fire crews responded around 12:43 a.m. to a four-story, 21-unit apartment building in the 5100 block of Bancroft Avenue, authorities said.

When crews arrived, smoke and flames were coming from all four floors, Oakland Fire Department Chief Damon Covington said.

Crews worked quickly to get everyone out of the building, with over 65 firefighters responding to the scene, Covington said.

"Crews did an amazing job at getting everyone out of the building, without any loss of life," Covington said.

Four residents of the apartment, including a nine-year-old child, were hospitalized following the fire, authorities said. No firefighters were injured.

Roughly 70 residents were displaced by the fire, authorities said, and the building was red-tagged, meaning it was declared unsafe to enter.

Covington said officials were looking into setting up a temporary shelter for residents impacted by the blaze.
